PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) The Pascagoula City Council has voted to apply for a $249,991 grant for the Safe Routes to School Program.
The grant, administered by the state Department of Transportation, requires no local match.
The program would fund new signs, school-zone flashers and crosswalk re-striping for Beach, Cherokee and Lake elementary schools. It would also fund a portion of sidewalk at Jackson Elementary.
Jen Dearman, director of community and economic development, tells The Sun Herald the safe routes program also would teach students how to be safe on roads.
The council voted Tuesday to apply for the grant.
