Officer Involved in Deadly Accident is New to the Force in Mobile
(MOBILE, Ala.) - New details have surfaced about the Mobile Police officer involved in a deadly accident Friday night.
Police say Officer Richard Brown was driving west on Government Street responding to a shots fired call when Michael and Mary Bragg stepped in front of his car.
Michael died from his injuries that night. His wife Mary is still in critical condition at USA Medical Center.
Officer Brown was hired in February of 2011. He's still in his probationary period with the department.
Mobile Police Chief Micheal Williams said Officer Brown is currently on paid leave to emotionally address what happened.
The 31-year-old officer joined the force in February. Before then, he worked as a police officer for the Millry in Washington County and as an officer for the University of South Alabama. Chief Williams said it's not clear when the officer will come back to work for Mobile.
"Some cases take longer than others. So we'll monitor him and make sure that he's okay," he said.
Police say Officer Brown had the green light at the intersection when he was responding to the call. They also said he was driving 43 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone.
The department is not saying if there was dash cam video of the incident of his car even had the system installed.
It is a tragic event. On events in this nature, we send our officers to our chaplain or to counseling, and they have to be cleared to come back to work. At this point, he has not been cleared," said Chief Williams.
