(NORTHPORT, Ala.) Under an ordinance passed by the city council, people won't be allowed to openly carry guns on city property in Northport.

The Tuscaloosa News reports the city council passed the ordinance Monday. Northport City Administrator Scott Collins says anyone who enters a city-owned building or part with a gun openly displayed will be asked to leave.

It is legal to openly carry a firearm in Alabama.

The ordinance is less restrictive than an earlier version approved at a council meeting last month. Under that one, a person carrying a gun openly would have been guilty of trespassing upon stepping on the property.

Under the new ordinance a person carrying a gun openly on city property will only be charged with trespassing if he or she refuses to leave.

With every city having their own gun laws how would anybody visiting from out of state know all these laws. If your town allows something and you drive 20 miles and the next town makes it illegal how are you supposed to know? Why not have one law at the state level and everybody would have to comply. It certainly makes more sense.

I might see this backwards, but I wonder how legal this is? Isn't the purpose of "open carry" to prevent carriers from "hiding" their guns? If guns are visible- everyone knows who has a gun. If a gun is concealed- no one knows. Those who carry concealed must have a permit to do so. Seems to me that this is a backward move by Northport CC.
