MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Tuesday night, we told you about a Mobile resident who remains without a roof and electricity after the Christmas Day tornado.
Irish Johnson is keeping a light on, thanks to an extension cord from a neighbor, but it's cold and the blue tarps leak when it rains.
There's no electric service, no heat, and lately, little hope.
"My top is missing, it's cold in here. I have no way of cooking food. The tornado tore up everything," said Irish. "Here I sit, and wait and pray."
But Wednesday, someone came to see if they could help.
Mobile Community Action does a lot of work weatherizing homes and making them more energy efficient in the Mobile community.
"Just looking at Mrs. Johnson's house right now, she needs a roof," said MCC's Linda Marshall. "And the lights, utilities is off and there's nothing we can even do right now to get her utilities restored because of the condition of the home."
"You know," Marshall said quietly, "there are no funds available at this time to assist clients with what needs to be done."
But there is another place Irish could turn to for help. Local 15 contacted some of our council members Wednesday, and they told us the community planning and development department has some funds available.
Applicants have to meet strict requirements. You have to own you own property and you have to maintain insurance on that property. As it turns out, Irish has both.
