(MOBILE, Ala.) - Mobile Mardi Gras revelers will no longer be able to park on the median near the Mobile Convention Center. In the past it's been a popular and convenient spot that police say has become a hazard.

“I know people have been parking there forever,” Cpl. Chris Levy. “Why wait until someone gets hurt to make a change?”

Police say between lighting issues and drivers speeding off and on to I-10, it creates a dangerous situation.

“People are walking out, trying to cross the street between parked cars when it’s hard to see them,” Levy said. “You also have people stopping in fast-moving traffic to get up a curb.”

Police are asking drivers instead to park at the CSX building or cruise terminal for a fee of $10, which is bumped up to $15 on Joe Cain Day and Fat Tuesday.

Police say they’ll be trying to give as much warning as possible to drivers parking in prohibited areas. Towed vehicles will be taken to a temporary lot under the I-10 bridge. After 11 p.m., cars are moved to the regular impound lot behind the PD’s training academy at 1251 Virginia Street. Getting your vehicle back costs $125, payable by cash and credit or debit card.

Mobile Police will begin closing streets in the downtown area about one hour before each scheduled parade. Non-parking areas will be designated by signage, including special green and gold Mardi Gras “No Parking” signs along parade routes.

Hey Oh S**t...you really are that stupid. 40 or 50 thousand of your closest friends? You known them all for years from the alley next to the old Princess House!

Longie: "You can trace the downfall of every downtown as a residential and retail area to the advent of parking meters back in the mid 30's and expanded use continuing into the 60's." But enough of this. I would have no problem with buses running from malls etc. I wouldn't have to ride them but some would. The big problem with shuttle buses is you are at the mercy of the schedule. So if you want to stay a little later or leave a little earlier you may be SOS. At least that's what I hear from folks who ride them to the Senior Bowl, etc. BUT to the matter at hand, where do you want to meet for the parade tonight? Church Street? Government? Ryan Park where our handicapped citizens have a special place? Or perhaps Royal where you can pause afterwards for a drink at the Joe Cain Cafe? Or your favotite spot. Oh, I forgot. Stay calm man. I'm off in a few to join about 40-50 thousand or so of my closest fellow funseekers. Wish you could be there?

Hey Oh S**t...the only veins you see are Scam's and they ain't in his neck! Are you really that stupid? You're the one that mentioned Boston and New Orleans and having to pay $35 to park to see the attractions. In case you forgot this is (Moon Pie) in the sky Mobile, AL where the biggest attraction the city has is about ready to begin and the our local government is not only going to corn hole the tourists but the locals too. I will get back to the real issue that Scam wants you to deflect...why doesn't the City run buses from the Malls and other areas downtown for the parades? Because it would further damage the City's finances due to lack of parking revenues, tickets revenues, towing fees etc. It's just a matter of time before the voters wake up and see the Mayor and council for what they are, and through the entire bunch out. Unfortunately, you'll go right along with them!!

Longiewillie - you are a hoot but don't get so angry. The veins in your neck are showing through your keyboard. Remember your blood pressure you know. Perhaps you had a TA but your comment was, and I quote, "You can trace the downfall of every downtown as a residential and retail area to the advent of parking meters back in the mid 30's and expanded use continuing into the 60's." That's why Boston et. al were mentioned - you wrote "every downtown." Can't have it both ways but then again that's what CAVE people try to do. Oh, BTW, about eight years ago on Mardi Gras as I walked by that very median a car full of teens pulling out into the street was broadsided from a fast moving car exiting on Water St. and the force turned knocked the first car of its side. Many of your fellow citizens rushed to their aid - fortunaely only bruises. BUT it does point out how the median in that area (it's more narrow than other parts you know) can be a problem because of the interstate exit. No, it wasn't my favorite move but why should I be livid about it? I am a local and know where to park. BTW I also know where to park in New Orleans and Boston to avoid "being gouged". Thanks though for confirming however that you are stuck in the 70s. Oh, and none of the folks who usually park on that medium will park at the Cruise Terminal - they are locals too who enjoy Mobile's attractions.

Charge what you want to. I don't care! If they REALLY were serious about making money from visitors during the Mardi Gras event, they would have some convenient and FREE parking instead of having to hunt a space and park several blocks away and be harassed by the local thugs hitting you up for money, cigarettes, food, or whatever. On top of that, Mobile is owned and operated by blacks and therefore I have no business nor reason to go there for any reason other than legal stuff that is absolutely necessary. I also have no desire to dodge bullets & drunks. Comparing Mobile to Boston, is that supposed to be a joke?

Hey Oh S**t...We're not talking about Boston or New Orleans, we're talk about Mobile, Al. Both Boston and New Orleans have major attractions downtown that not only attract tourist but locals as well. If you are a local or are familiar with Boston or New Orleans you know where to park to avoid being gouged. This is Mobile and the attractions downtown are lame at best. Tourism is a non issue and now the city will gouge the local some more by taking away any free parking. I thought you were all about downtown, Truth is you could care less about downtown...if you did you would be livid about this move. I've lived in Mobile since '74...I know exactly what this city has to offer and I know exactly what it doesn't have to offer. Mobile is at best a second tier city and our leadership likes it like that or they would do something to change it. The only thing more disappointing than the lack of foresight in our leadership is the depth of your ignorance. Now crawl back to your knee hole...Scam's chubby little buddy needs someone to play with!

Mayor Scam needs to provide work for his friends at Bay Security, the minority owned firm that he hired to run the cruise terminal parking garage. He come up with a new way to scratch their back by gouging the people that attend Mardi Gras.

Oh longie your age and lack of getting out and about is showing. Glad you have made a new posting friend in mayman. I, like most, do not like to pay for parking when I go to town BUT even at $10 or $15 it is a bargain compared to other downtowns. For example in Boston the lowest rate you can find if you wish to go the the Arqarium or Science Museum is $35 and then you have to walk and catch the T as you are not right on site. Many cities (I don't agree but it's coming) are now charging rates at meters based on demand i.e. the highest demand time of day cost more than the time of day when the demand is low. (The meters are computerized to change based on demand.) And New Orelans, if you can find a spot, has meters that will cost you big bucks for just a few hours (even take crdit or debit cards) and the downtown there is busy even with high crime, delapidated buildings and high prices. It's all about the sizzle. Try to get out more longie and see how much your city has to offer (and yes, we have many things in WM and even SM as well). Just e careful. We need our CAVE (Citizens Against Virtually Everything) people. Otherwise where could we get a good laugh now and then. Oh, watch that BP.

Excuse me for repeating myself...The City wants people to come to town... make it a residential and retail center. As long as they charge to park it ain't going to happen. You can trace the downfall of every downtown as a residential and retail area to the advent of parking meters back in the mid 30's and expanded use continuing into the 60's. Coincidentally, the advent of the suburban malls, with ample free parking, occurred during the same time period. In Mobile, it costs .25 for 15 minutes or a dollar an hour. In comparison, Montgomery is only .25 for an hour. Mobile is only hurting their chances to develop downtown back into a residential and retail center by charging to park! The MTA could run buses from major points around the city downtown for a few bucks R/T...think these geniuses would even consider doing something that's actually beneficial for the citizens. I need to get in the bus business, I doubt I could get a city license unless the Mayor and Council Members were partners. $10 to park at the cruise terminal? That's highway robbery and people will actually pay it!

Jenna Susko has moved to the Bay area of San Francisco. Is it ironic that people have been parking there for decades and when the City of Mobile faces a 26 million dollar budget shortfall they prohibit parking in that area and quickly find a paid parking area at the closed cruise terminal? This is another scam that Scam Jones has come up with. Next he will be charging people to breath in Downtown Mobile. I laugh at the idiot Chris Levy being trotted out in front of the camera to justify this farce. He does Scam's bidding and is driving Scam's clown car. Mobile has Police Officers injuring and killing people and all of a sudden they are concerned with people parking in a certain area. Perhaps they are worried that the Police Officers will run somone else down. Think of all the ew revenue they hope to reap from this new "parking tax", charging people to park in a parking lot that the citizens are forced to pay for in the form of more taxes disguised as parking fees. First it was the city charging people for using credit and debit cards and now this. Look for more to come, the city is broke and will start getting desperate and charging exorbitant taxes and calling it new fees.
