BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - Harrison HMA, owners of Gulf Coast Medical Center, has been give state approval to build a new medical center in Biloxi.

The Mississippi State Department of Health issued a certificate of need for the project this past week. Mississippi requires a CON in a process designed to avoid duplication of health care services and control costs.

The current hospital is located 300 yards from the Gulf of Mexico.

The $133 million project will relocate the 144-bed acute care facility to 35 acres just off Interstate 10 in north Biloxi and four miles north of the coastline.

The relocated facility will be known as The Hospital at Cedar Lake.

HMA operates Biloxi Regional Medical Center and nine other hospitals in Mississippi.
