(MOBILE, Ala.) - Mobile's three county commissioners were sworn in Wednesday morning. Along with returning commissioners Merceria Ludgood and Connie Hudson, was newly elected commissioner Jerry Carl.
Commissioner Hudson, who served as president for the last year and a half, hoped to retain her position. But there were two other commissioners who also wanted the job.
It's tradition that the position of president rotates every 16 months, so next in line to serve would be district three's Commissioner Jerry Carl. But Connie Hudson felt that due to Carl's lack of experience, her term as president should be extended.
"My concern was that this being a brand new role for you Mr. Carl, that it does take time to learn the responsibilities and become acquainted with the protocols and what really the job entails," said Hudson.
"The president commission continue the process that has been followed in the past, rotating every 16 months," added Carl.
"I think the media kind of planted that it's district three's time, but it's never really worked out that way," Ludgood said.
Hudson did not receive the support from Carl and Ludgood to continue to serve as president. Ludgood made a motion of her own, that she would serve as president beginning Wednesday, Nov. 14. That motion was approved.
Hudson will serve as vice president.
