BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A conservation group says it has bought about 760 acres of land along the Little Cahaba River to protect habitat for endangered and threatened species.
The Nature Conservancy of Alabama says it acquired the Bibb County acreage from the Hancock Timber Resource Group using almost $750,000 in federal grant money. The organization says it's trying to raise another $1 million in matching funds for the deal.
The land includes extensive frontage along the Little Cahaba River and Six Mile Creek, one of its larger tributaries.
The group says the land is home to at least 15 species that the federal government considers endangered or threatened.
