MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A new kind of popular doppler radar was unveiled Friday.

The National Weather Service said the new tool will help better predict severe weather.

It's designed to warn meteorologists when a storm is threatening our area. Officials say it can also view storms in 3D.

"One thing you'll always hear meteorologists say is we need more data, we need it faster, we need it quicker. This helps us get to that end much quicker. It's already been a big benefit and forecast, in a tornado warning, where are the tornadoes going to go. We'll be looking at a large tornado, most perimeters are getting to the meteorologist much faster using this new technology," said Jeff Garmon with the National Weather Service in Mobile.

It cost about $250,000 to update the radar.
