(MOBILE, Ala.) - The National Weather Service says assessments show more than a dozen tornadoes struck Alabama on Christmas Day.

Meteorologists from the agency's Birmingham and Mobile offices have been on the road since Tuesday evaluating damage left by the severe storms that raked through the state.

The forecaster in charge of the Mobile office, Jeff Cupo, said Friday experts have found evidence of 14 different twisters, some which crossed county lines. All the tornadoes were in south Alabama.

Three tornadoes hit Lowndes County, the most in any one county.

The state's lone fatality happened at Georgiana in Butler County, where a tree fell on the home of an elderly man. Cupo says it appears strong winds are to blame for the man's death, not a tornado.
