(MOBILE, Ala.) Murphy High School seniors returned to class Monday morning, nearly two weeks after their school was heavily damaged by a Christmas day tornado.
They are temporarily being placed at Clark-Shaw Magnet School.
This first day on the unified campus appeared to go pretty well.
Murphy students gathered at their damaged campus to board buses to Clark-Shaw.
Many who usually walk or drive found themselves riding a bus for the first time in a long time.
Then there was just getting used to new surroundings and a new routine.
Splitting a campus into two, one a middle school and one a high school, is no easy task.
The first day was seniors only, with their classmates arriving over the remainder of the week.
"You have 2,500 students at Murphy," said school superintendent Martha Peek.
"To get everybody settled, for them to know the campus, for them to know the rules of the campus and where they are, we needed to bring them in in phases. So just having each class come in at one time by Friday, we'll have everybody here and it will be a fully functioning school day."
"The modular units are very comfortable," said Murphy principal Dr. William Smith. "We have our own restrooms where the modular units are, and another cafeteria. So I think they're gonna be really comfortable."
Murphy's principal also said students will have to get used to being on a closed campus, unlike the damaged Murphy High campus.
