(MOBILE, Ala.)   About 400 employees at three major Alabama daily newspapers are losing their jobs as parent company Advance Publications shifts its focus to more online news.

The employees at The Birmingham News, the Press-Register in Mobile and The Huntsville Times were being told of the layoffs Tuesday. Those papers will be switching to three days a week service in the fall.

The employees being laid off can apply for jobs at the new companies being formed by Advance Publications.

Local 15's Andrea Ramey received this statement from the company this afternoon:

"We regret that we will not be able to offer employment to all our current staffs in the new companies. We are providing our department employees with as much advance notice as possible and offering to them a generous severance agreement and outplacement packages," said Pam Siddall, president of Advance Central Services of Alabama.

it is not about customers unhappy with service and writing, it is simply because the internet and electronic communications have been replacing the printed word. I am sad to see this happen, but it has been coming for a long time. As it stands now, I refuse to buy a kindle and still buy all my books on paper, but that too will fall to digital technology in a few years. And as for 3 days of publication, that too will be gone in a few years.

The Press Register is not worth the cost of the paper and ink it is printed on. I cancelled my subscription years ago because of the poorly written articles and lack of decent reporting. I feel sorry for the loss of jobs but the customers have spoken.. its time for the PR to go under.
