(MOBILE, Ala.) The Gulf Coast Law Enforcement community is looking at policy and procedures after this tragedy.
They're looking closely at moments before Officer Steven Green was killed - and asking the question: What could have been done differently?
Sheriff Sam Cochran reviewed the video surveillance tape and says everything was done by the book.
He says Officer Green was simply doing his job, when he was blindsided by suspect Lawrence Wallace.
"I'm sure we'll study it, revisit everything that took place. We've already been playing it in our minds is there anything that should've been done differently," says Cochran.
"The most serious offense is somehow the individual had come out of handcuffs. Somehow he had taken the handcuffs off,"
Cochran also addressed the issue of suspects and jewelry. He does not believe the medallion the suspect wore led to the deadly assault.
But, the question stands, should jewelry be removed before the suspect ever gets to the docket room?
"Jewelry can be so much stuff. What about shoes? Do you remove belts," says Cochran. "I can't really think of another incident where this has become an issue, and that's why we have to take the time to thoroughly investigate this."
The Mobile County Sheriff's Department has a policy against weapons inside the docket area which is why Officer Green left his gun inside his patrol car. Lawrence used the gun in a shootout with police following the stabbing,
