MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) It's the moment many people who live and work in and around the Brookley Aeroplex have been waiting for. The Michigan Avenue Bridge is finally reopen to traffic leading into Brookley.

The bridge was a major shortcut for a lot of drivers, but they haven't had that shortcut in more than two years.

The project cost $3.7 million to complete with funding coming from the Federal Highway Administration and Department of Transportation. The city of Mobile matched 20% of that amount.

Last month, there were concerns the bridge was not going to be finished on time and one of the contractors was facing major fines for every day the bridge was not finished.

One of the biggest obstacles were the train tracks that run under the bridge and the crews having to stop and start work as the trains go through.

"This bridge is essential to that process, getting goods in and out of Brookley is one of the key things in this manufacturing process," said Mayor Sam Jones.
