(MOBILE, Ala.) - Even though we're about a week away from Christmas, Santa took some time out of his very busy schedule to visit some special children Sunday.
Mercy Medical's Guardian Angel program held its annual pediatric Christmas party for patients.
"For many of these kids because they're sick, and because it's hard to get them out, this is the only Christmas party that they'll have many times," said Donna Wilhelm.
Mercy Medical serves pediatric patients in Mobile and Baldwin Counties. Because no child is ever turned away, the Guardian Angel Program raises money for the uninsured and under-insured patients. The money allows children to receive the care they need at home.
"They need these nurses to come into their home and provide very specialized services. Without it, I honestly don't know what they would do," said Wilhelm.
Jerolyn McManus's grandson Joel died 10 years ago from Leukemia. Because of Mercy Medical, he was able to spend what precious little time he had with family at home, instead of in a hospital.
"He was happy at home, and we were happy to have him home," said McManus. "And it was a wonderful experience, and I am forever grateful to Mercy."
Mercy Medical says it has served more than 2,000 children since 1998.
