(FAIRHOPE, Ala.) The true star of Monday's college football championship was not a player or coach but one of the spectators.
Ever since Katherine Webb, the girlfriend of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron was shown in the stands during the game's broadcast, she has become an instant celebrity.
The former beauty queen's Twitter account is a buzz with thousands of postings from job offers to dates.
This morning on NBC's Today Show, the the 23-year-old talked about getting so much attention from both the public and the game's announcer Brent Musburger.
"I think the media has been really unfair to him," Webb said. "I think that if he would have said something along the lines of we were hot or sexy or made any derogatory statements like that, I think that would have been a little bit different. But the fact that he said we were beautiful and gorgeous I don't see why any woman wouldn't be flattered by that.
"You know I'm honestly really shocked that it really took off like that and you know I think that we need to draw back our attention to who the real winners are. That's the Alabama football team. They spent so long getting ready for this season and they won their second back to back national championship and that's such an accomplishment. I'm flattered by all the attention and I'm humbled, but at the same time I think we need to draw back our focus to who the real winners are. "
ESPN has since apologized for Musburger's comments saying, "We apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that."
