(MOBILE, Ala.) (AP) July 4 - Mobile Mayor Sam Jones says his cancer is in remission, and his doctors believe he should be healthy for years to come.

The mayor told The Press-Register newspaper on Friday that he "feels an overwhelming sense of relief and gratitude."

He spoke by phone from Little Rock, Ark., where he was receiving treatment for a rare and potentially lethal form of cancer.

The 61-year-old Jones was diagnosed in January with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that destroys bone tissue and leads to death within five years for nearly half of those diagnosed.
