(MOBILE, Ala.) - Mobile Police are investigating a burglary at a local elementary school. It happened this weekend at Maryvale Elementary off Dauphin Island Parkway. The school system says many of the stolen electronics are used by special needs students.
Facilities Manager Tommy Sheffield says about a dozen laptops and iPads were stolen. He estimated the value to be around $10,000.
"It's a good thing for the kids to be able to come to our schools, get on these devices, learn how to navigate through the technology, increase their studies. And they leave them on the weekend, go home, and they come back Monday and somebody has stolen them. It's hard to swallow," said Sheffield.
Sheffield says it's not clear how the burglar or burglars got in to the school. They didn't leave behind any busted windows or doors, and there's no surveillance video.
Sheffield says it takes months to either retrieve the devices or go through the insurance claims process to replace them.
