(MOBILE, Ala.) - Mobile Police say a man who side-swiped a vehicle on Government Street ended up in a serious wreck while driving recklessly away from the scene.

The original accident happened near the I-65 on-ramp. Witnesses say the man was driving close to 100 mph, and coming close to striking other vehicles while leaving the scene. About a half mile down the road from the original accident, the man careened off the roadway, knocking down a street light, striking a guardrail, going airborne over a ravine, and was ejected when his SUV landed on the other side.

“He just passed by us like a bat out of hell,” Jason Williamson, who was driving into work when he was nearly struck by the driver, said. “It’s amazing he didn’t hit us or anyone that walks up and down this road.”

Police, who are not releasing the name of the man, say he was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but is expected to survive. The woman driving the side-swiped vehicle was not injured.

Police say the driver probably won’t face any serious charges, and will be most likely be ticketed for leaving the scene of an accident without injury.
