MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) Sheriffs from three local counties united Wednesday in a news conference concerning proposed gun legislation in Montgomery.

Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran, Baldwin County Sheriff Hoss Mack and Escambia, Ala. Sheriff Grover Smith were joined by numerous other law enforcement officials to speak out against Senate Bill 286.

They claim, among many things, that the proposed law will take away their ability to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and mentally ill people, and make guns more available to teens and at public places and events.

"Many, dozens of reasons why this is a bad idea, the biggest thing is public safety, public safety for the law enforcement officers and safety for the citizens. This many guns in the vehicles without permits, in the hands of teenagers without requiring any background check on them is dangerous, it's very dangerous," said Sheriff Cochran.
