(MOBILE, Ala.) - A Mobile jury has awarded almost $6 million after an an accident that killed one dock worker and injured another.

Carl Williams was killed and Edward Purdue was injured when the skiff they were working on was yanked out of the water by a winch onboard an oil tanker. The accident happened in June 2008 on the Mobile River.

"The companies deserve to pay a heavy price, not only to accept responsibility for the accident, but because they were not telling the truth about what happened and their role in it. A message needed to be sent that worker safety must be the most important thing, and that a company must stand behind their actions and make things right. This tragic accident should never have happened” said Cole Portis, one of the lawyers representing the families.
