(MOBILE, Ala.) A federal judge has denied a request from former Mobile County Commissioner Steve Nodine to rescind his guilty plea and his request for a new trial in the federal case against him.

Nodine pleaded guilty in 2010 to owning a gun while being hooked on drugs. He served 12 months of his 15 month sentence in a federal prison in Miami for that guilty plea.

Nodine was also accused of killing his longtime girlfriend Angel Downs. In 2010, the case ended in a hung jury. Last month, Nodine was expected to go to trial for that murder, but instead reached a plea deal the day before. He pleaded guilty to third degree domestic violence, a misdemeanor, and a felony charge of perjury for lying about being indigent with the court.
