WILMER, Ala. (WPMI) -- Fire officials in Wilmer want to know why a fire hydrant near a burning home Sunday had no water to help fight the blaze.
The fire swallowed nearly everything in the mobile home on Venus Drive. "On a trailer, normally you can save them, sometimes you can't they just go up so quick," Wilmer Volunteer Fire Chief Mike Cooper told Local 15.
Cooper said he was compiling a list of hydrants in the area with the same issue. "Sometimes some of these hydrants out here is not working; they have them shut off for some ungodly reason," he said. Cooper said he would take the list and questions to South Alabama Utilities, who supplies water to the area.
Calls to South Alabama Utilities seeking comment were not returned Sunday.
The woman who lived at the home, who is also a volunteer firefighter, was not home. Ironically, she was out for her birthday. The celebration turned to sadness.
"We'll all come together to help her restore all the things she can't recover, we'll be beside her the whole time."
