OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) - Long Beach High School students have a chance at a national title after beating 21 other teams from five Southern states in a contest of ocean science knowledge.
The Mississippi Press reports that the 22 teams in Saturday's Hurricane Bowl came from Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
Officials say it's the biggest group of contestants since Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005 for the Hurricane Bowl, formally known as the Central Gulf Coast Regional Ocean Sciences Bowl.
The Long Beach High School "A" team won the contest at the University of Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs.
It will compete with 24 other regional winners in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl, scheduled April 20-22 in Baltimore.
