Big Turnout at Job Fair
(MOUNT VERNON, Ala.) Dec. 9 - For people out of work this holiday season, ThyssenKrupp is hiring. Hundreds of people waited in line this morning at a job fair in Mount Vernon.
Matthew Glaze may have been just one in the crowd today, but to the people hiring at ThyssenKrupp, he hopes to have been one that stood out.
"I need a job," Glaze said.
Glaze said he was laid off on Thanksgiving. It's not exactly something he thought he would be telling his wife over the holiday dinner. He hasn't had to look for a job in three years and never thought it would be this hard.
"I've called probably hundreds of places and nobody's even willing to accept applications," Glaze said.
But Wednesday, Glaze and hundreds of other people did find someone accepting applications. ThyssenKrupp is hiring 1,800 new workers.
"We're beginning our operations in spring 2010 and that's a date that's been on our calendar for the last 2 years and its just a few months away," said ThyssenKrupp Steel USA spokesman Scott Posey.
Posey says the company is looking to hire at least 1,000 people as soon as possible. He also says at least 30 percent of the applicants hired come from job fairs.
The pay is between $20/hr and $30/hr. Open positions include operations, mechanical and sales.
This is the 13th job fair ThyssenKrupp has had in the past two years. They intend to fill all of the available positions by the spring.
