(PENSACOLA, Fla.) Dozens of officers lined Pensacola International Airport on Monday, for the arrival of the Honor Flag for fallen Officer Steven Green.
It then made the trek to Mobile Police Headquarters, where it will stay for now.
The flag was hand delivered by the pilot of the plane who transported it. It's in a sealed case, and is electronically scanned for authenticity by the officers who receive it and somberly honored by those who assure it will reach it's destination.
"The idea for this flag was conceived shortly after 9/11. And its purpose is to honor fallen police officers, fire fighters and soldiers. It's journey here is just one of many that it's taken in it's lifetime," said Lt. Roy Hodge with the Mobile Police Department.
The journey to Mobile began in Miami, then to Pensacola, where it was properly received before the next leg of its journey to Mobile for the funeral of slain Officer Green.
A single officer carried the flag, clutched close to his chest, from Pensacola International Airport to a waiting car. Once in Mobile, the same officer carried the flag, close to his chest.
The flag's next assignment will be the services for Officer Green.
The Honor Flag will spend the night locked in a vault at Mobile Police Headquarters. For the next few days, the flag will belong to Officer Steven Green. It will be displayed at each service, a symbol of fallen heroes. And then it will be tucked away, waiting for its next assignment.
