Two Homes Burning in Prichard
(PRICHARD, Ala.) Nov. 17 - Two homes caught fire on West Petain Street in Prichard Tuesday evening.
The fire began at one home just before 7 p.m. and spread to the house next door. Both the homeowner and officials say they do not yet have an idea what may have sparked the blaze.
Melvin Baker owns the four-bedroom house that burned to the ground and lives in the home right next door. He called 911 when he realized the house was on fire, but Baker claims the Prichard Fire Department showed up and spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how to get water so they could put out the flames.
"They say they cant even open the fire hydrant," Baker said. "Aren't you supposed to have the tools to open the fire hydrant if you the fire department? It's painted red. Your truck is painted red. That means you supposed to operate it!"
Prichard officials say Baker's allegations are not true. They believe the firefighters did exactly what they were supposed to.
