(MOBILE, Ala.) July 2 - It is the Thursday before a major holiday weekend, and traffic is already grinding to a stop in some places as holiday travelers work their way along major roadways.
Officials say holiday drivers will not be the only ones hitting the Interstate, and state troopers will be right alongside drivers using their Blood-Alcohol Testing Mobile. Troopers say they use the BATMobile to test impaired drivers on the scene, and they say road blocks have already been set up for the Fourth of July weekend.
Cpl. Joe Piggot says every available trooper will be out on the roads looking for dangerous drivers. Piggot says troopers keep a special eye out for impaired drivers, people following too closely and speeders, and he says troopers will be everywhere including patrols on the interstates, U.S. routes, county roads and city streets.
Reports show 16 people died in state-wide car crashes last Fourth of July weekend, and troopers say they want the number of accidents at a minimum; reports show three of those deaths were alcohol related.
