(MOBILE, Ala.) The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is typically the busiest travel day of the year.

This year, it's estimated 43 million people will hit the road across the U.S.

Locally, there will be thousands of people heading off to grandma's house for the holidays.

Safety officials are asking travelers to pack your patience during the holiday.

They're issuing a reminder: don't drink and drive, buckle up and watch out for the other guy.

"We know you want to get to where you're going safely, but what we're asking is when you hit the highway, be smart, slow down, " says Sgt. Joe Piggott, Alabama State Trooper.

The 102-hour travel period begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday and runs through midnight on Sunday.
