MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Computer hackers claiming to be from the loose-knit group known as Anonymous say they have broken into several Alabama law enforcement and government websites.

In an online news release Friday, the group says it stole the personal information of more than 46,000 Alabama citizens. The information includes Social Security numbers, license plate numbers, criminal records and phone numbers.

The group says the attack was prompted by Alabama's "racist legislation" targeting immigrants. Alabama's recently-passed law is among the toughest crackdowns nationwide on illegal immigrants. The group says it will not use the personal information to do damage.

Mobile Police Department spokeswoman Ashley Rains says police are aware of the group's claims. Officials for the city of Mobile did not immediately respond to calls for comment.
