BAY MINETTE, Ala. (WPMI) - Bay Minette Police have arrested two Baldwin County High School students for carrying a gun on campus Thursday.
Police said both teens were taken into custody and transported to Baldwin County Juvenile Detention Center. No students were harmed in the incident.
Baldwin County School Spokesperson Terry Wilhite said a parent alerted school administrators of a possible gun on campus in a student's backpack. A faculty member found the backpack and handed to police.
Police said the student admitted to carrying an unloaded 380 pistol and magazine clip in his book bag and giving it to another student.
Wilhite said both students will be suspended and possibly expelled for the infraction. He said the school was not placed on lockdown because there was no immediate threat to students, and the whole incident lasted about three minutes.
"Nobody knew that there was a gun on campus because no students were threatened," Wilhite said. The gun remained in the backpack until police found it."
Wilhite credits the parent coming forward, and the quick action of school faculty with keeping students safe Thursday.
"It takes a community to keep children safe at school, and this perfect example where a parent stepped forward to give the right information at the right time," Wilhite said.
Baldwin County High School Junior Kathryn Clemmons said she was surprised the school was not placed on lockdown. She found out about the incident after school on social media.
"Even though they said it wasn't a threat," Clemmons said, "it really was because if they would have snapped then that there could have been lives lost."
