(GULFPORT, Miss.) July 3 - The deputy chief of the Gulfport Police Department is hanging up his badge for private security credentials at the IP Casino.

Deputy Police Chief Alfred Sexton, 42, announced his retirement Wednesday. Sexton is a 24-year veteran of the Gulfport Police Department.

Gulfport Police Chief Alan Weatherford has already announced Cmdr. Leonard Papania will step into the now vacant position of deputy chief. The Gulfport City Council will vote on Papania's nomination Tuesday.

Sexton joined the GPD in 1985 as a dispatcher, and he started patrolling city streets in 1991. While he was working his way up the GPD ranks, Sexton earned a master's degree in the administration of criminal justice. He was promoted to deputy chief in 2006.
