GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A consultant is recommending that the Gulfport eliminate administrative positions in the police and fire departments, close a fire station and consider other changes to save $2 million a year or more.
Mayor George Schloegel told The Sun Herald Tuesday he plans to discuss the recommendations with his administration, including the police and fire chiefs, before coming back to the council in January with recommendations.
The council refused to close fire station No. 4, as the administration advised, when the budget was approved in September.
Council President Ricky Dombrowski said he needs to review the detailed consultant's report before he comments on it.
The city operated with a $1.36 million deficit for the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30 and is also faced with dwindling cash reserves.
