MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has announced the timeline for a special election for the District 97 seat in the state House of Representatives.

District 97 covers portions of Mobile County. The seat was formerly held by Rep. Yvonne Kennedy, who died Dec. 8.

The timeline for the special election calls for a primary election to be held Feb. 26. If a primary isn't necessary because the major parties have only one candidate, the special general election would be Feb. 26.

If needed, a special primary runoff election would be held April 9.

If a runoff isn't needed because one candidate receives a majority of votes in the special primary election, the special general election would be held April 9.

If a runoff is required, the special general election would be May 21.
