MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Governor Robert Bentley is weighing in on the shortening of red snapper season.

Bentley was in the Port City Tuesday for the Seafood Summit.

The fishing season was recently shortened to 27 days, the shortest season ever.

"I think we need to extend the boundary, like Congressman Bonner would like to do. Ours is three miles, to extend it out to nine miles. So I certainly think we need to be catching more than two red snapper. That's ridiculous," Bentley said.

Federal officials want to shorten the season to protect the fish from overfishing. But anglers say the red snapper population is booming.
