GAUTIER, Miss. (AP) The Gautier City Council is expected to consider Tuesday night a resolution asking the Pascagoula School District school board for a new name - Pascagoula-Gautier School District.
Mayor Tommy Fortenberry tells The Mississippi Press that a school district name change would further efforts to strengthening Gautier's identity.
The Gautier area has been part of the Pascagoula School District for more than 50 years and about half of the students in the district reside in Gautier.
Officials say the resolution proposes that the addition of the name Gautier further promotes the rich ancestral French heritage of the region in addition to the Pascagoula Native American heritage.
Officials say the resolution contends the name change would have minimal financial impact as the name can be integrated over time.
