MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Republican leader of the Alabama Senate has helped pay the legal bills of a Democratic senator acquitted of all charges in Alabama's gambling corruption investigation.

Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh of Anniston filed a campaign finance report showing he gave $5,000 from his campaign fund to a legal defense fund for Democratic Sen. Quinton Ross of Montgomery. Marsh said he contributed to the defense fund after Ross' acquittal because he wanted to help him through a difficult period in his life.

Ross said he appreciated Marsh reaching across party lines and looking at the human side of the issue. Two Democratic senators also reported using campaign money to help Ross's defense fund, but their donations were smaller than Marsh's.
