MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Fort Conde will now be known at Forts Car Lata, the Spanish version of its name.

The name recognizes that Mobile was under Spanish rule for 33 years after the end of the Revolutionary War until the beginning of the War of 1812. Wednesday's renaming is just the first step toward a bigger event.

"We're leading this up to a big event in April. On April 13, we're going to celebrate the 200th anniversary of mobile becoming an American city," said Wayne Simon, chairman of the Bicentennial Commission for 1812.

The celebration on April 13, will include raising of the flag, troops in town and a significant person from the Spanish Embassy will be in town.

Forte Car Lata will be renamed Fort Conde on April 13.

I am not so sure about the 200th anniversary of Mobile being an American city. Mobile has only been a city of the United States of America for 145 consecutive years, as the state of Alabama was officially restored into the Union in 1868.
