MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) When she saw flames shooting up from her elderly neighbors’ home, Janet Pierre heart sank.
Pierre said she would often chat with "Dot" Norris, and knew her husband had been in poor health for some time.
"I knew he was in real bad shape, and there was a lot they couldn't do," Pierre told Local 15. "I just prayed they made it out."
Firefighters found the elderly couple just inside the front door of their Japonica Lane home, pulled them out and transported both to the hospital. The fire apparently started in a back Florida-style room, sending thick smoke throughout the house.
Pierre said the couple's dog "Patches" did not make it.
"[The firefighters] came out with the dog and laid him on the ground," Pierre said. "We knew he was dead. It was real sad."
Pierre said a special prayer for her neighbors at mass on Sunday.
"We prayed for them because...we didn't know if they were still alive," Pierre said. "We hear they are so I hope they're not suffering."
