THEODORE, Ala. (WPMI) Authorities say 16 people have been taken to several local hospitals after a small bus collided with a car in Theodore.

Sgt. Joe Piggott said Melissa Hayes drove the bus carrying five adults and nine children aged 11 to 12-years-old. The principal at Riverhill School in Florence, Ala., confirms the children are from that school.

The bus and a small car collided around 2:30 p.m. on Dauphin Island Parkway and Fowl River Road Monday.

The principal says the children, who are on a field trip, got to Dauphin Island Sunday night. They had planned to stay until Thursday. We're told they were headed to Felix's Fish Camp on the Causeway for dinner when the accident happened.

Officials say the children were taken to the hospital as a precaution. They are expected to be okay. The driver of the car, Vallorie Reynolds Hall, was flown to USA Medical Center and is in critical condition. State Troopers say there are no fatalities in the accident.

Greer's employees say a man busted out the window of the van to rescue the children inside.

I went to a school that took an annual trip to Dauphin Island to do work with the sea lab. I didn't go on that trip, so I don't know exactly what they di, but it did last about a week in the spring.

The speed limit is already safe @ 55, no sense in lowering it just because some people can't drive. Look for texting or some form of driver distraction to be the cause of the accident, not that a newly installed red light would stop that from happening. There are more and more accidents happening these days from the advance in stupid social media and electronic communication devices that people misuse while driving. BTW..... the field trip does seem to be an actual vacation, next time I'm on vacation for a week I'll just call it a field trip.

That has to be the longest field trip I have ever heard about! From Sunday to Thursday and it isn't even spring break yet. Or is it? That should be called a vacation and not a field trip. What exactly were they learning on Dauphin Island? Is there a fishing and tanning curriculum in their school?
