(MOBILE, Ala.) According to health experts, people who came in to contact with sewage aboard Carnival Triumph are at risk for bacterial and viral diseases, even parasites. Health experts said germs could be easily spread through fecal matter and can survive for hours on any hard surface.
Passengers spoke of leaking sewage traveling and sludging its way around the ship. They reported using red bags to relieve themselves.
Greater Mobile Urgent Care's Dr. Darren Waters said exposure to sewage can lead to Hepatitis A and Hepatitis C, norovirus, E-coli, and Salmonella. Dr. Waters said many passengers will not know if they are infected for some time because symptoms can lie dormant.
"Each one of these germs have different incubation periods. So certainly you can feel fine now and days, weeks, even months later, you can then develop illness," said Waters.
Dr. Waters said if you decide to go on a cruise to pack medicine for nausea, diarrhea, and anti-bacterial wipes or spray.
