Decision on School Closures Coming Thursday
(BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala.) March 17 - Thursday, Baldwin County will make a decision on whether or not to close two schools to save money.
Vaughn Elementary in Stockton and the Baldwin County Alternative School in Fairhope are on the chopping block.
The possible closures were brought up during a school board work session at Gulf Shores Middle School tonight. The board says the two schools simply don't have enough enrollment to justify keeping them open.
"Sixty students at the Alternative School for about $1.6 million a year at Vaughn Elementary School, you are looking at around 120 students for about $2 million a year," said Baldwin Schools spokesman, Terry Wilhite. "It comes down to sheer economics at a difficult time."
If the schools close, Wilhite says students will be bussed to other schools nearby.
