MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) One Mobile city councilman wants to more than double the mayor's salary to $200,000.

Councilman John Williams plans to introduce the item at next week's council meeting and hopes to pass the measure before the election

Williams says he's against raising his own salary and that of his colleagues but says the mayor is grossly underpaid at roughly $75,000 plus benefits and expenses.

He also says he has no plans to run for the mayoral position.

He hopes a higher salary will attract business-minded people to the office in the future.

We tried to reach Mayor Sam Jones about the proposal but our calls were not immediately returned.

This Councilman is otside his mind!! The new County Commissioner Jerry Carl has declined to accept a salary and this is what public servants use to do, they run for the job and try to make a difference in their community. This is the new way greedy politicians like John Williams thinks, it's all about the money and what a person can get out of being a politician. John Williams has shown how much he cares about his city and community, he sees the political office holders as people that are driven to get rich and do nothing without a dollar amount placed on their time and service. I have news for John Williams, responsibility and the desired to help others is what motivates good men and women of great character, not MONEY!!!! Williams must not remember how broke Mobile supposedly is and how they were recently crying about laying city workers off if they didn't get the sales tax increase. Now that they got that tax he can't wait to spend it on nonsense like excessive salaries and perks for the elected officials. Scam Jones is already styling in a taxpayer funded Cadillac Escalade with a Police Officer as his personal chauffer.

The mayor is much more compensated than led to believe by the councilman. The "benefits and expenses" alone testify to this statement. "Williams says he's against raising his own salary and that of his colleagues but says the mayor is grossly underpaid at roughly $75,000 plus benefits and expenses."
