(MOBILE, Ala.) - A Mobile city councilman is hoping to get the ball rolling next week on plans to establish a new entertainment district downtown.
Councilman William Carroll will meet with bar and restaurant owners and downtown residents next Wednesday to discuss a new statewide bill that allows certain cities like Mobile to create designated areas where people can drink openly outside.
Carroll believes if people know they can walk the streets with alcoholic beverages it will draw in more tourists and businesses.
“I think it will give us an extra added walkable value to downtown. It will also help with the economy because we have more people that are downtown willing to go bar to bar to bar,” says Councilman William Carroll.
The meeting will be held at the downtown Mobile Alliance Building at 4pm Wednesday.
Once an ordinance is drawn up, it will go before the city council for a vote.
Carroll hopes to have the districts established in time for Mardi Gras.
