(MOBILE, Ala.) A little extra cash is on the way for some Mobile City Employees, and leaders say it's long overdue.

The city is preparing to shell out $2.5 million in just a few weeks. It's called Longevity Pay.

Full-time workers employed with the city for a year can expect to receive a $1,000 just in time for the holidays.

Councilman Jermaine Burrell says he had been looking for a way to give employees an economic boost during these tough times.

But, the question is -- exactly how will the city pay for it?

Councilman William Carroll says the money won't come from funds generated from the one cent sales tax.

"The $1,000 each employee gets was identified in $3.7 million which was additional revenue from the previous year as well as additional savings by the administration," says Carroll.

Employees can expect to receive the $1,000 in extra cash before Christmas.

Most senior employees in the merit system are not even halfway up the pay scale, robbed of deserving pay increases at the expense infrastructure and special intrest advancements decided by the mayors and council members, when according to the personel board guidelines they should be at the top. This 1k minus taxes, is shut-up money, it is not a cola, nor a merit raise that counts as a permenant deserving step. I realize this sounds ungrateful, however it is more bitter for 20+ years of deception.
