MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Mobile city and county leaders are back in the Port City after visiting Germany and Airbus' Assembly plant. Officials say they have a better understanding of how Airbus will operate in Mobile.
Mayor Sam Jones, the city council and county commission spend several days touring the Airbus plants in Hamburg, Germany. They stated they are excited about the buzz surrounding Airbus arrival in Mobile.
Commissioner Jerry Carl told Local 15 the trip to Hamburg was productive and educational. Carl stated his goal was to develop relationships with suppliers and sub contractors, to convince them to move to St. Elmo's Airport. It sits on more than 700 acres of land.
During the trip, Commissioner Carl stated companies were really interested but needed to see more development take place before making a commitment.
"We're going to have to get in and start developing it, and let it come together. No one's going to run to us with just raw dirt and say okay we're ready to rent a picture property. We're going to have to actually develop the property and market it," said Commissioner Carl.
The county and state already have plans to update St. Elmo Airport. Carl stated community members are more than willing to help make any adjustments to accommodate potential suppliers.
