(MOBILE, Ala.) -
The 2010 race for Alabama Governor is in full swing, so you've probably seen plenty of campaign signs around town. But there's one person who is apparently not too happy with the signs one family is posting. Will Dumas and his family wanted to show their support for a candidate for Alabama Governor. So, like many other folks, they posted a sign on their property. Someone stole the "Byrne for Governor" sign less than 24 hours after they put it up.
And each time Dumas replaced the sign, it was torn down again. "It has been torn down three times," says Dumas. "We're outraged that our political liberties are being infringed on in this way."
So the Dumas family set out to catch the thief. "We put up a camera that's actually a game camera that's designed for tracking wildlife," says Dumas, "to see if maybe we could capture this individual."
And they did catch the thief on camera in the act, cutting out the sign and carting it away. But Dumas couldn't identify the thief from the photos. So he took his complaint to the Mobile County District Attorney, John Tyson, Jr., to see if anything else could be done.
"Like everything else, we'll find the facts first and then decide what we're gonna do," Tyson said. "And if any of your viewers know who this is, we'd be very interested in discovering the identity."
Dumas says each sign can cost more than $200, which the campaign pays. Dumas wants the thief identified so that person will have to pay for the signs and explain why he did it.
