MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Mobile's Historic Barton Academy building is about to get an exterior facelift, thanks to $3.5 million allocated by the school board from recently approved construction bonds.
Monday morning, the newly formed Barton Academy Foundation announced plans to start raising funds to renovate the inside. The goal is to transform the old school board headquarters into a world studies school.
The new sixth through 12th grade school would house about 400 students who would focus on global understanding of international relations. It's something board members and foundation supporters say the community needs as huge multinational companies like Airbus and ThyssenKrupp become part of our community.
Some parts of the new curriculum are already being introduced at some schools in the system, but the renovations at Barton will take a couple of years.
