(SPANISH FORT, Ala.) - The first state operated veterans cemetery was dedicated Friday morning in Baldwin County.
The cemetery is on Alabama 225, right across from the Fort Blakeley State Park.
The groundbreaking on the cemetery took place about a year ago, and in a year's time, organizers have prepped the cemetery and it's almost ready for burial applications.
"After 25 years of trying, today was the culmination of a long effort involving hundreds of people," said Capt. Hal Pierce, U.S. Navy (Ret.).
The cemetery is 103 acres of land in Baldwin County.
Burials for veterans and eligible family members could start in the early part of next year.
