FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WPMI) Friday was a day full of joy and achievement for hundreds of students and their families at the Special Olympics in Baldwin County.

Fairhope's Municipal Park was home to the Special Olympics for athletes from Bay Minette to Orange Beach  All the Special Olympians have been training for the big day for months now. It was the perfect day for a perfect group of special athletes.

The park was surrounded by relay races, soft ball throws and pure excitement. "It excites us for our own child … to be able to have that special day, " said Kevin Snell whose daughter Bailey competed today.

These athletes are well trained and they're modest too. "That says it all. Do you feel good - yes- alright good," said Special Olympian Trace Parker from Delta Elementary School.

All 47 Baldwin County schools are represented. "I think personally it's probably the largest event as county that we do for students because when you count the number of athletes and the volunteers that come in we are talking several thousand students that are here, " said Carol Palumbo, special services coordinator with Baldwin County Schools.

Special education students from all of the county's elementary, middle and high schools took part in all the action today.
